Univision Houston & UHD Partner for Third Consecutive Year
For the third consecutive year, UHD and Univision Houston, the region’s leading Spanish-language television network, have partnered on the Tu Futuro (“Your Future”) scholarship program.
The 2021-2022 Tu Futuro Scholarship was awarded to two students, Maria Castrejon, graduate of KIPP Connect, KIPP ISD, and Kenneth Garcia, graduate of Alief Early College High School, Alief ISD. Castrejon is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Completion Program (RN to BSN), and Garcia is majoring in biology for a career in orthopedics. Both Castrejon and Garcia received full scholarships to UHD.
“The Tu Futuro Scholarship program is one of my favorite community strengthening initiatives that we do every year. It’s rare to be a part of something that offers an opportunity to witness a life-changing moment,” said Glenn Coleman, vice president/station leader, Univision Houston. “For the very deserving recipients, these scholarships provide a path not only to free higher education, but also to the economic empowerment of their families and our community at large. The magnitude of this program will be felt not only now, but hopefully for generations to come, as our winners will be forever affected and will pass it on,” added Coleman. “Univision Houston could not ask for a better partner for this empowerment initiative than the University of Houston-Downtown, one of the premier educational institutions for Houstonians.”
Open to recent high school grads residing in the Houston area, Tu Futuro will award a local student a full scholarship covering the cost of a four-year bachelor’s degree at UHD.
“This scholarship is making a difference in the community and especially in the Hispanic community,” said UHD President Loren J. Blanchard. “It’s about creating opportunities for those who might not have thought they would have the financial means,” Blanchard said. “But not only do they get the funding, they also get all the amenities of support, guidance and advice to ensure they cross the finish line, graduate and achieve their respective career goals.”
