The Coconino Panthers put together a strong defensive second half to beat the Prescott Lady Badgers 44-30 at the Badger Dome. The Lady Badgers fell behind but came back from a seven-point deficit in the first quarter to tie the game at 17 with a three-pointer from Zoe Libis at 5:33 in the first half.
The Panthers took a time-out and restored their offense, opening up the color for some easy trips to the basket to get back in front. Prescott kept close to baskets from Rylee Hobson and Rylee King to follow 23-21. Coconino got a late three from the corner of Kaelin Lee to lead 26-21 at halftime.

The second half was a different story altogether, as the Lady Badgers battled for baskets, scoring just nine points in the final 16 minutes of play. Coconino did a great job on the boards to give Prescott plenty of one-shot trips as they slowly increased their lead to 36-26 after three quarters. Coconino also had his fighting moments in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Badgers still couldn’t muster a few baskets.
Prescott is standing (2-6) in GCR and (7-12) overall, with a tough rivalry game tonight at Bradshaw Mountain. Game time is 5:30 p.m.

It took the Prescott Badgers overtime to knock out a rowdy team of Coconino Panthers 80-78. It was Prescott’s first win at Coconino since Dec. 16, 2013, when the Badgers won 60-48 and broke an eight-game losing streak in Pantherville.
Prescott won the first meeting of the season 74-44 in a ho hum, this game was over early, contest. It’s rare to find something like this when these two teams meet on the pitch. “As we walked in we knew this wasn’t going to be the same team that we saw here a few weeks ago. We even struggled with a player who didn’t play us in the first meeting,” said Badgers coach Travis Stedman. “Coconino is always a very tough place to play, the atmosphere is intense and you better be ready to play or you’ll get beat. We all knew that if we don’t win tonight, our next game doesn’t matter,” Stedman added in reference to the regional title fight with Bradshaw Mountain.
The Badgers took an early lead, bouncing from one point to six and growing to a 27-21 in the second quarter with 5:37 to go. Prescott would retain the lead with a 38-30 halftime advantage.
The lead would grow to 44-30 but the Panthers would struggle to close the gap to 44-36. Something else happened with the Coconino comeback. A fourth foul on Uriah Tenette midway through the third quarter presented the Badgers with problems of their own. “I had to let him sit for a bit, but I knew I couldn’t keep him out for long,” Stedman said.
Prescott stuck at 48, allowing Coconino to get back in the game and continue a 9-0 run to the tie. The Badgers would score the next five points and lead 53-50 after three quarters. Meanwhile, a fourth foul on Uriah Tenette midway through the third quarter presented the Badgers with problems of its own.
The game stayed tight for the last eight minutes and Coconino was able to level the game with 67 and then take a 70-67 lead by just 1:18. Jake Hilton dropped a three and it was another tie. Trailing 72-70, the Badgers leveled the game with five seconds left when Cooper Magnett was fouled, calmly sinking both free throws to send it into overtime.
Like the first 32 minutes, overtime was just as intense. Prescott jumped 77-72 to a pair of baskets, one from Uriah Tenette and a three-pointer from Magnett. Once again, Coconino came back to take a 78-77 lead in a 6-0 run with 22:22 on the clock. The Badgers worked the ball inside to Zane Gaul, who made the short-range basket inside for a 79-78 lead. The Panthers’ quick shot failed and Tenette was fouled. Tenette converted just one of two, leaving the door open, but the Panthers’ final shot missed the rim and gave the Badgers a hard-fought 80-78 win.
Uriah Tenette, who played a quarter plus overtime with four fouls, had 28 points and seven assists. Jake Hilton scored 16 points and Zane Gaul worked hard with 14 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. Ivory Washington led the Panthers with 22 before failing. Prescott won the all-important fight at the free-throw line 14-7 while Coconino edged out the Badgers 7-6.
There will be no downtime for the Badgers as they will host Bradshaw Mountain tonight at 7pm at the Badger Dome. The Bears sit third while the Badgers are 10th in the 4A state rankings. A win at Bradshaw Mountain earns them the Grand Canyon Region Championship, and a win at Badger earns the two teams a shared title. That is, if both teams win the rest of the regular season games.
