Mertena’s Stellar Day Lifts Lady Vols in Western Carolina Doubleheader

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.— The Tennessee women’s tennis team won both games in their midweek doubleheader against Western Carolina, winning the first game 5-2 before beating the Catamounts 4-0 in the second game.

Rebekah Mertena was just fantastic, it went 4-0 in both singles and doubles. you and Esther Adeshina scored two 6-0 double wins before beating Isabella Sambola 6-0, 6-1 in the first match and Leilany Ipunesso 6-1, 6-1 in the second. That day, Mertena went 36-3 in games played, posting a 12-0 doubles line and a 24-3 aggregate in singles.

“Western Carolina were a solid opponent for us today,” said the head coach Alison Ojeda said. “They played disciplined tennis throughout the games. Now I’m looking forward to getting back on tour with the team this weekend and getting better.”

Darja Kuczer and Lauren Anzalotta both contributed singles wins in both matches and Kuczer was 4-0 between singles and doubles on the day. you and Leyla Britez Rissomaking her collegiate debut, grabbed the colon in both games and posted 6-2 wins to give the Lady Vols a 1-0 advantage going into singles.

Ashtin Hara also made her college debut on Wednesday. In their first doubles game ever, she and Anzalotta defeated Andrea Redondo/Jade Groen 6-4 to record a third win for the Tennessee doubles line in the first game.

In singles play, Adeshina gobbled up a point for Tennessee (3-1) in the first game, beating Ipunesso 6-0, 6-3 for the Lady Vols’ second singles point in the contest.

NEXT: Tennessee heads for a weekend in the Carolinas, beginning with a game in Furman on Friday at 3:00 p.m. The team will then travel to Raleigh, North Carolina, where they will face NC State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET.
