Men’s Tennis Doubles Down with Two Road Wins at The Citadel

CHARLESTON, SC — The Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team opened the spring 2023 table in Charleston, SC on Monday with not one, but two road wins at country enemy The Citadel
The Chants (2-0) suffered just two defeats in 15 games, including a perfect 3-0 in doubles that day.
Match 1: Coastal Carolina 6, The Citadel 1
Coastal opened their 2023 season with a dominant 6-1 win over The Citadel in the first of two games on Monday.
The Chants won the doubles and took a 1-0 lead.
The 2022 all-conference duo of Steve Mundt and Carlos BernaRuiz defeated the Bulldogs tandem Hayden Shoemake and Lucas Robins 6-4 in the major division. CCU’s other two teams won 6-2 as a team of Ryūya Ata and May Tomac won in flight #2 while the pair of Guilherme Toresan and Luke Wegenburg were victorious in flight #3.
In singles play, the Chants were victorious in flights #2-6, winning four of the five games in straight sets.
Mundt beat Bradley Minnich 6-2, 6-0 on flight #6 while Tomac beat Ted Bagwell 6-2, 6-2 on flight #5.
The other two straight wins came on Flights Nos. 2 and 3 as Berna Ruiz defeated Sebastian Kamieniecki 6-2, 7-6 for the win at No. 2, while Wayenburg defeated Zvonko Bencedic 6-3, 6 -4 at #3.
CCU’s fifth singles win in the first game of the day was over Neil O’Connorwho bounced back from a first-set loss to beat No. 4-seeded Robins in three sets 5-7 6-1 6-4.
Match 2: Coastal Carolina 5, The Citadel 1
In the second game, the Chants again won five of the six individual fights and won 5:1. The two teams did not play doubles as the game was decided in singles.
Just like in the first game of the day, the Chants’ only loss came in singles flight #1.
On Flight #2, Ata picked up his first win of the spring with a 6-1, 7-6 win over Kamieniecki, while Toresan dominated in #3 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Robins.
Tomac improved to 2-0 in the season with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Bencedic in fourth place, while Mundt also moved up to 2-0 to go 6-7, 6-0 into the spring table start. 6-2 win in 5th place over Bagwell.
True newbie Rivers Cahill grabbed his first win of the spring season with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 win over 6th-ranked Tucker Hendrix.
The Chants remain en route to take on South Carolina State on Thursday, January 26 at 1:00pm ET in Orangeburg, SC
