Eleni Helen Mazareas

Lynn – Eleni “Helen” (Tsouleas) Mazareas of Lynn died peacefully at the age of 95 on Tuesday in Lynn. She was the wife of the late Kostas G. Mazareas. Born and raised in Neochori, Greece, she emigrated to the United States in 1955 and has lived in Lynn ever since.
Eleni worked for Sylvania and Phillips Lighting in Lynn and retired in 1990. She was firm in her faith and an active member of St George’s Greek Orthodox Church in Lynn. She was also a longtime member of the St. George Ladies Philoptochos Society, where she enjoyed the opportunity to engage in community and philanthropic service to her community.
An avid gardener, Eleni was gifted in her ability to consistently tend and grow a bountiful vegetable crop in her garden. She was not only mistress of her garden, but also of her kitchen. Always incorporating the fruits of her labor into her tasty – and well-kept – Greek recipes, Eleni had Fasolakia, Yemista, Baked Melanzana and Moussaka ready to deliver to a loved one’s house. Also a master baker, her treasured kourabiedes and koulourakia were tucked into her dessert jar on her kitchen table, beckoning her guests to try one.
Eleni had an incredible command of her craft needles and her old Singer sewing machine. Whether mending clothes or giving gifts, Eleni was quick with her knitting and crocheting needles and made sweaters, scarves and bedspreads. Above all, she created beautiful and meticulous doilies that adorned her sofas, tables and home.
She devoted herself above all to her family and will be remembered as a wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. Eleni will also be remembered for her wonderful generosity. She lived her life for others and will be greatly missed. Eleni is survived by their son George Mazareas and his wife Cynthia Tanner Mazareas of Nahant, their granddaughter Eleni Mazareas of Nahant; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
Her funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church, 54 S. Common St., Lynn. Burial will take place at Pine Grove Cemetery. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Those who prefer may make a donation to St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 54 S. Common St., Lynn, MA 00902.
