The Syracuse University football team added two players to complete their 2023 recruiting class on National Signing Day.
As of Wednesday evening, the now completed 2023 class of SU trainer Dino Babers took 81st place nationally at the 247Sports Recruiting Service and last in the ACC.
The SU 2023 signing class consists of a total of 22 players with incoming high school recruits, junior college prospects and FBS transfers, 20 of whom joined at the start of the early signing phase on December 21st.
The orange ended Wednesday with the signing of wide receiver Darrell Gill Jr. as a high school recruit and the official addition of Fordham transfer Tom Callahan as a long snapper.
Gill Jr. is a 6-foot-3, 175-pound wideout from Atascocita High School in Texas. Last fall, as a senior, he caught 55 passes for 1,148 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Gill Jr. is unrated by 247Sports and chose SU over offers from Purdue, Washington State and South Dakota State.
Callahan is a redshirt junior who has appeared in all 23 games as a long snapper for Fordham for the past two seasons.
The SU tier contains no players rated above three stars for the fifth year in a row.
Syracuse notably lost to four-star quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who signed with his home states South Carolina Gamecocks Dec. 23 after making a verbal commitment to SU last year.
Coming off a 7-6 campaign, Syracuse kicks off its eighth season under Babers by hosting Colgate on Sept. 2 at the JMA Wireless Dome.
SU TRANSFERS INK WITH POWERS
Former SU all-conference defenders Duce Chestnut and Ja’Had Carter each officially signed with a national power after leaving the Orange for the transfer portal in December.
Chestnut has signed his letter of intent with Louisiana State University after committing to LSU last month. The third-year cornerback from Camden, NJ, was a two-time All-ACC selection and freshman All-American and started every game during his two seasons with Orange.
Carter signed with the state of Ohio and also made his commitment public in January. The Richmond, Virginia safety averaged 138 tackles, 12 pass breakups and five interceptions in three combined seasons as a SU starter. He received an All-ACC honorable mention last season.
The Syracuse spring football game will be held on Friday, April 21 at 7 p.m. at the JMA Wireless Dome. The date was announced this week by the ACC Network, along with all other conference teams.
The excursion will only be available to stream on the ACC Network Extra.
Several outgoing SU players will participate in various upcoming Showcase games in hopes of improving their respective NFL draft stocks.
Offensive tackle Matthew Bergeron will compete Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the University of South Alabama in the Reese’s Senior Bowl. The 6-foot-5, 322-pound lineman has been projected as high as the first round by multiple outlets and is a fixture on most top 10 lists at his position.
Kicker Andre Szmyt will take part in the East-West Shrine Bowl in Las Vegas on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on the NFL Network.
Linebacker Mikel Jones played in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, which ended last Saturday, and reportedly drew interest while speaking to several league teams, including the Buffalo Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers, Los Angeles Chargers and the Tennessee Titans.
