In the girls game last night…
• Hancock beat Calumet 50-47. The Copper Kings led by six points at halftime, but the Bulldogs opened the second half with 10 straight points to take command and then held off a late Calumet surge. Bella Hebert advanced Hancock by 19 points. Laina Kariniemi scored 15 for Calumet.
On the boys’ schedule tonight…

In high school skiing at Mont Ripley yesterday, the Houghton boys finished second behind Marquette and the girls finished third behind Marquette and Norway. The Gremlins’ Eli Heathman finished second in both the slalom and giant slalom. Rachel Sun finished fifth in giant slalom and seventh in slalom. Houghton greets Kingsford and Gladstone in high school swimming today.
college basketball
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams host Wayne State tonight — the women at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m.
Both Northern Michigan basketball teams maintain the state of Saginaw Valley.
The Finlandia men’s team welcomes Gogebic Community College tonight at 19:00.
college hockey
Michigan Tech’s Blake Pietila was named January’s CCHA Goaltender of the Month. In January, Pietila held a 1.37 goals-against average while going 6-1-1 with three shutouts. Pietila was named CCHA Goaltender of the Week three times in January, including last week.
NHL
The Wings go on All-Star hiatus and return on February 7th with a home game against the Oilers.
NBA
The Pistons’ home game against the Wizards last night was postponed as Detroit was stranded in Dallas due to inclement weather.
