Speed of Air Develops Breakthrough Piston Technology

Speed of Air Duramax Hyperformance pistons
Optimizing internal combustion to improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions and boost performance for medium-duty diesel engines.
RENO, NEVADA, UNITED STATES, Feb. 1, 2023 /EINPresswire.com/ — Airspeed® (SoA) Engine Technologies has developed new technology that improves the efficiency of medium-duty diesel engines and offers significant performance benefits. SoA’s patented piston treatment offers increased torque, higher power, reduced emissions and greatly improved fuel efficiency. These improvements also make a significant contribution to extending engine life and reducing service intervals. Fuel savings alone, documented by independent commercial users, are up to 25 percent and more, a critical consideration for fleets facing higher fuel prices.
SoA’s patented technology consists primarily of precision CNC-machined indentations on the top of the piston, known as turbulators, but most commonly referred to simply as “dimples”. This precisely designed and manufactured technology is executed to exacting tolerances to ISO 9001 quality standards. These turbulators create a thinner, more adherent boundary layer between the air-fuel mixture, its flame front, and the combustion chamber walls. This thin, turbulent layer allows the combustion flame front to burn much closer to the cool metal walls of the combustion chamber, increasing overall combustion efficiency. The result is a significant reduction in fuel consumption, reduced emissions, more torque and horsepower, improved drivability and pulling power. Lower soot emissions result in longer engine life and shorter maintenance intervals.
SOA’s Hyperformance pistons also include the application of aerospace proven thermal insulation and anti-friction coatings to the piston crowns and skirts respectively. The thermal barrier layer retains heat in the combustion process for extra efficiency and performance. The anti-friction coating minimizes abrasion and resistance for even more efficiency. The combined technologies of a Speed of Air Hyperformance piston offer documented and significant benefits.
Laboratory tests and many years of practical tests in a wide variety of applications confirm the results. Notably, DFC Diesel, an innovative industry leader and Canada’s largest diesel engine remanufacturer, has been independently testing SoA technology in more than a dozen Dodge, Ford and Chevy trucks for nearly two years.
During testing, DFC Diesel observed fuel economy reductions of 25% or more with factory tuning, an average 5% increase in torque and power, NOx reductions of up to 80%, and the ability to extend oil drain intervals by 50% Soot and fuel dilution. Observed benefits also include reduced regeneration cycles, DEF consumption and visible exhaust/opacity, as well as noticeably smoother and quieter operation.
To manufacture these custom piston kits, SoA licensed United Engine and Machine Co. (UEM), a leading piston manufacturer with over 100 years of experience and a well-deserved reputation for quality. As a family-run company, UEM has its own design, development and manufacturing capabilities that enable this company to meet the piston requirements for almost any type of engine.
Speed of Air Engine Technologies is a Reno, Nevada based company dedicated to developing innovative solutions for the internal combustion engine industry. SoA’s clean engine technologies promise a clear benefit for industry bottom line today and a cleaner environment tomorrow. Looking ahead, SoA has plans to rapidly expand its piston technology to a range of other engine and fuel applications, including heavy-duty truck and large-bore industrial applications.
