Junior hockey: Jake LaRusso lifts Northeast Generals to victory over Maine Nordiques

The Northeast Generals’ Jake LaRusso broke away from the top scoring group in the North American Hockey League on Monday, scoring all four goals in the Generals’ 4-1 win over the Maine Nordiques at the New England Sports Village in Attleboro, Massachusetts .
Before Monday’s game against the Maine Nordiques, LaRusso tied for most goals in the NAHL (23) with the Maryland Black Bears’ Christian Catalano and the New Mexico Wolves’ William Howard in a three-way tie.
After Monday’s win, LaRusso, 20, now has 27 goals and 19 assists in 36 games.
LaRusso scored the four goals early, all of which came on power plays in the first half, to give Northeast a 4-0 lead.
The Generals were 4 to 6 on the game’s power play while the Nordiques remained scoreless on five chances.
Tommy Heaney’s night ended in the Nordiques’ kink after the fourth goal. He saved 11 of 15 shots. His backup, Kael DePape, stopped all 21 shots he faced.
Northeast’s Paul Minnehan, an Arizona State player, had assists on three of LaRusso’s four goals. NAHL points leader David Andreychuk had one assist and now has 58 points (14 goals, 44 assists) in 40 games.
Oliver Genest got the Nordiques on the board with about five minutes remaining in the first half. Jackson Foddrill and Kellan Murphy had the assists in Genest’s 10th record of the season.
Generals goalie Cullen DeYoung made 32 saves in the win.
Northeast (22-12-5, 49 points) now has an 11-point lead over Maine (18-15-2, 38 points) for third place in the East Division. The Nordiques currently sit in fourth and final playoff spot in the East. The Johnstown Tomahawks (17-17-2, 36 points) are right behind in fifth place.
The Philadelphia Rebels are coming to The Colisee on Friday (7:05 p.m.) and Saturday (7:00 p.m.) to take on the Nordiques.
