College roundup: CMCC edges UMaine-Augusta in women’s basketball

AUBURN — Clara Bandh scored 12 points and Emily Strachan 10 as Central Maine Community College shook off the University of Maine at Augusta for a 57-54 win in a Yankee Small College Conference women’s basketball game on Wednesday.
The Mustangs (28-3) led 16-7 after a quarter and were still nine points clear at halftime (25-16).
Alisyn Alley scored the game 19 points for the Moose (19-9) and Monmouth graduate Kaeti Butterfield helped out with 10.
BATES’ GRAFF DESERVES AWARDS: Meghan Graff’s 38-point performance in two games last weekend was named Maine Co-Player of the Week by the Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association on Wednesday.
The Bates captain scored 26 points and another 12 points against Williams in the Bobcats’ 77-59 win over Middlebury on Friday. She averages 21.9 points per game and leads NESCAC in scoring.
Maine 66, Bryant 43: The Black Bears (12-9, 8-1 America East) led 11-10 after a quarter, used a 22-10 run to take a 32-20 lead at halftime, and handled the Bulldogs (7- 16, 0-) without any problems. 9) at Orono.
Adrianna Smith led Maine with a double-double of 14 points and 13 boards, while Sera Hodgdon and Olivia Rockwood both contributed 11 points.
Mariona Planes Fortuny was 15 points clear of Bryant.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
CMCC 82, UMA 75: Boston Caldwell passed the Mustangs by 21 points as they leapt forward and beat the Moose in Auburn.
Wyatt Hathaway and Jaeden Henderson each added 14 points for Central Maine Community College.
Yonas Medfu led all goal scorers with 26 points for the University of Maine at Augusta.
Bryant 71, Maine 53: The Bulldogs (14-8, 5-4 America East) took control with a 14-1 run to open the second half when they defeated the Black Bears (9-13, 3-6 ) passed.
Earl Timberlake led Bryant with 18 points and 14 rebounds, Sherif Gross-Bullock played in with 16 and Charles Pride added 14.
Ja’Shonte Wright Mcleish had 11 points to lead Maine.
BATES’ CRAVITZ RECEIVES ROOKIE HONOR: Bates freshman guard Elliott Cravitz put in two strong performances this past weekend to be named co-rookie of the week for the second straight year. He scored nine points, had two assists and rebounds against Middlebury. Against Williams, he lost 10 points and grabbed four rebounds.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
BATES’ CASUALLY RECOGNIZED: Bates College sophomore Sophie Casually posted season bests in all of her events and was named NESCAC’s Artist Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday. Their efforts also helped lead the Bobcats to a CBB title — something they haven’t done since the 2016-17 season. She posted record times of 26.2, 55.8, and 200.96 in the 50, 100, and 200 freestyle.
