Prowlers Hang 10 On Sea Wolves in Baton Rouge

December 15, 2022 – Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL) – Port Huron Prowlers press release

The Port Huron Prowlers defeated the Mississippi Sea Wolves 10-5 on December 15 in a game on neutral ground at Raising Cane’s River Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The game also featured four fights, three of which were fought in the third period.

The first half started harmlessly, with Timothy Payne scoring the opening goal after just over eight minutes with a shot from the point. It was the third time in three games that the Sea Wolves had scored the first goal against the Prowlers. However, Port Huron had an answer.

Evan Foley finished with his eighth of the year just after halfway through the period. Larri Vartiainen scored home with a backhand to give the Prowlers the lead later in the frame. Alex Johnson scored a one-off power play goal to put Port Huron in the dressing room 3-1.

Johnson scored again early in the second, but Mississippi showed some struggle. Matt Caranci and Michael Haskins scored 35 seconds apart to move their team into position. The Prowlers pulled away again before the deadline with goals from Adam Heinzl and Austin Fetterly. Lucas Helland and Bryan Parsons also dropped the gloves during the frame. With a score of 6:3, the third round started.

Liam Freeborn extended Port Huron’s lead to four just 58 seconds into the final third. Just after five minutes, Dustin Henning dropped the gloves with Haskins in a fight that resulted in Henning going to the penalty box and Haskins going to the dressing room for repairs. A few minutes later, Sam Williams took a push at Helland, who cornered Frank Schumacher, and started another fight.

The Sea Wolves got some life with a goal from former Prowler Dakota Ulmer and an own goal when Parsons tried to control a puck in the crease. That made it a 7-5 game before Port Huron finally pulled away. Dalton Jay scored two of the last three and Foley had the other as the Prowlers hit a season-high 10 goals. Johnson and Marvin Powell also faced each other in the third fight of the final period.

Freeborn and Vartiainen finished the game with one goal and two assists each. Jay, Foley, and Johnson each lit the lamp twice. They were among eight Prowlers who ended in multipoint games. Wyatt Hoflin made 30 saves in the net.

Ulmer led the Sea Wolves with three points while Caranci had two. Another former Prowler, Ian Wallace, was between the whistles and made 28 stops. This is the third time this season that Mississippi has given up double-digit goals.

The second of three matchups this week between these teams will take place in Biloxi on December 16, with the puck drop scheduled for 8:05 p.m. East.
