Bed Bath & Beyond closing list: Crystal Lake, Chicago Ridge, Forest Park, Wilmette and Geneva to close in Illinois, company says
Bed Bath and Beyond closes another 87 stores as struggling retailer heads for bankruptcy.
These closures are in addition to the 150 Bed Bath and Beyond closures announced last August. Included in the new list are 5 Buybuy Baby locations and all 49 remaining Harmon Face Value stores that sold cosmetics, as well as several of the retailer’s flagship brand stores across the country.
“As we continue to work with our advisors to consider multiple avenues, we are implementing measures to run our business as efficiently as possible,” a Bed Bath and Beyond spokesperson told CNN. “This reduction in store fleet extends the company’s ongoing program of closures.”

Bed Bath was founded in 1971 &Beyond became a staple for affordable home decor, kitchenware and college dorm furniture. The retailer became known for its ubiquitous 20% off blue coupons and cavernous stores with goods stacked to the ceiling. Bed Bath aggressively grew its corporate presence, peaking in 2017 with 1,552 stores.
But it has struggled to make the transition to online shopping and fended off larger chains like Walmart and Target. The retailer started making small ornaments in 2018 and in the first year of the pandemic began closing hundreds of stores, most notably its Bed, Bath and Beyond operations, and getting rid of some of its weaker brands like its Christmas Tree Shops.
As of last February, the company still had 953 stores and has since announced that it will close more than 200 more stores.
The closures reduced not only headcount and payroll costs, but also rent payments. The company’s total store area decreased by 36% in the four fiscal years ended February 2022.
But few troubled retailers have solved long-term problems by closing stores alone. Closures not only reduce costs, but also sales. Still, for a cash-strapped company like Bed, Bath and Beyond, liquidating inventory can help raise the cash it needs to fund operations through a reorganization.
Last week, the company warned in a regulatory filing that it had received a default notice from its lender, JPMorgan Chase. The company said that “the Company currently does not have sufficient resources to repay the amounts under the credit facilities and this will prompt the Company to consider all strategic alternatives, including the restructuring of its debt under the US Bankruptcy Act “.
According to the filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Bed Bath and Beyond defaulted “on or about” January 13. It could be forced to file for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization because of its financial problems.
