DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Wild fought back from falling behind in the third period and forced overtime before beating the Grand Rapids Griffins 2-1 on penalties on Monday afternoon. Nick Swaney scored the winning goal while Nic Petan scored the shootout winner for the Wild. Zane McIntyre had 37 saves in the win.
The Griffins opened the scoring with 6:26 of the first half when Alex Chiasson dropped a pass to Austin Czarnik on the top of the crease, who placed the puck under McIntyre.
McIntyre held Grand Rapids off the board for the rest of the opening frame. The Iowa goaltender made his biggest save of the period with 8:22 left when he robbed Joel L’Esperance with a wide glove stop.
Grand Rapids carried a 1-0 lead and a 15-9 shot lead into the first break.
The Wild and the Griffins played a scoreless second period. With just seven minutes left, Iowa almost broke through when Damien Giroux tried to rush the puck under Victor Brattstrom’s left pad (28 saves). The rebound landed on Patrick Curry’s bat, whose connection chance only hit the post and failed to materialize.
The Wild added nine shots for a total of 18 over two periods while the Griffins totaled 24 shots in 40 minutes.
Swaney broke the deadlock at 5:36 of the third period on the power play. After Dakota Mermis set up Swaney in the right circle, Swaney fired a shot over Brattstrom’s shoulder to level the score at 1-1. Giroux was also credited with an assist for the game
Neither team could score in extra time and the goalkeepers held off the shooters in the first round of penalties. Petan chipped the puck over Brattstrom’s gloved hand in the top of the second round and McIntyre stopped the remaining Griffins shooters to secure the win.
Iowa went 5-1 on the power play while Grand Rapids went 3-0 with a man advantage. The Griffins passed the Wild 38-30.
