Eagles Crack Century Mark and Soar Over Brescia

MOREHEAD, KY — The Morehead State women’s basketball team went down 47 points in turnover Wednesday night en route to a 104-54 win over the Brescia Bearcats.

The Eagles had four players in double digits, led by Crystal Corleywho had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Sophie Baydanov added 15 points, four assists and three steals from the bench and Veronica Karl helped with 15 points, four assists and seven steals.

Morehead State used fantastic ball movement in Wednesday’s game, amassing 26 assists from 36 field goals scored. Individually, Sandra Lin was at the top of the Eagles’ mailing list with six assists Melissa Secchiaroli also contributed with four assists of his own.

Morehead State forced 37 Brescia turnovers while committing 16 in Wednesday’s game. The Eagles converted those takeaways into 47 points on the offensive end of the floor. Charles’ seven steals paved the way for Morehead State.

The Eagles return to action Friday against Evansville. The tip is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and can be found on ESPN+ or listened to on the Eagle Sports Radio Network.

How it happened

After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, Morehead State went on a 7-0 run at 7-41 in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Sophie Benharuga, take a 9-2 lead. The Eagles increased that lead by six points by the end of the third and went into the quarter-break with a 20-7 lead. Morehead State did the most damage in the first quarter in the color, scoring 14 of their 20 points near the basket.

Morehead State extended that lead to 25-11 in the first quarter before embarking on a 6-0 run in the second period that started at the 7:24 mark, highlighted by a bucket of Janay Roseto extend his lead to 31-11. The Eagles added eight points to that lead and enjoyed a 46-18 lead at halftime. Morehead State was strong from deep during this period, knocking down four three-pointers to account for 12 of its 26 points.

After the break, Morehead State continued to extend their lead, extending it to 56-24 before starting an 8-0 run that was cut short by a basket Tolisha Walkerto further extend his lead to 64-24 with 5:17 in the third. Before the third period was over, the Eagles increased that lead by five points and went into the fourth quarter with a 77-32 lead. Morehead State played well near the basket, scoring 16 of their 31 points in the paint.

Morehead State continued to extend that lead, extending it to 92-41 before starting a 7-0 run that was ended by Corley’s layup to extend the lead to 99-41 with 4:26 remaining in the contest. The Bearcats reduced the lead slightly before the game was over, but the Eagles still drove the rest of the way for the 104-54 win. Morehead State capitalized on its opportunities in the post, scoring 14 of its 27 points in the paint.
