About the book

first and last tells the story of an older woman who meets a much younger man. Sara, a 40-year-old single mom confined to her home for nearly three years during the COVID-19 pandemic in New England, longs to emerge from her self-imposed, protective isolation for the summer. She soon meets Zach, a summer vacationing college student who works 1,500 miles from his home in New Orleans and aspires to be the first in his family to graduate from college. The plot unfolds when a glitch in a dating app leads to the unlikely encounter between Sara and Zach.

Readers immediately warm to the novel’s heartfelt heroine, Sara, who has dedicated the past decade to her work, her well-being, and most importantly, her young daughter. The single mother has no time for anything else. When a shocking court decision gives her ex joint custody, Sara doesn’t know what to do with her time.

COVID has eased up a bit and she’s longing to be back outside. She’s got a fresh slice of freedom, but she’s still the same old, not-well-loving Sara. To the right?

While attending her best friend’s wedding out of town, Sara is suddenly struck by an incomplete life and unfulfilled desires and faces her intense loneliness. Years ago, after too many failed attempts, she’d given up all hope of her own happily ever after, but maybe it was time to try again.

Entertainingly, Sara realizes that she has nothing to lose by chatting with one. The last thing she expects is to make a real connection. But sweet, thoughtful, respectful 23-year-old Zach is a surprise. A night of chatting turns into two, then three.
