Montoursville, Montgomery, Canton win District 4 Duals openers to advance | News, Sports, Jobs

The MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette correspondent, Montoursville, wrestles North Penn-Liberty in Wednesday’s opener of District 4’s Class AA Duals.

Montoursville controlled the North Penn-Liberty duel from start to finish, winning eight fights through the fall, en route to a 73-0 win over the Mounties in the first round of the District 4 Duals on Wednesday.

The Warriors advanced to the quarterfinals at Milton High School on Saturday, which starts at 11 a.m. Montoursville meets fourth-seeded Montgomery — a 49-12 winner over Williamson on Wednesday.

Southern Columbia defeated Sugar Valley 43-24 and advanced to face top seed Warrior Run. In the bottom half of the table, third-placed Canton defeated Milton 42-22 and Towanda defeated Wyalusing 37-32. These two will face each other in a Northern Tier bout in the Quarterfinals of District 4 Dual.

In the final quarterfinal game, Lewisburg meets second-placed Benton. The Green Dragons defeated Hughesville 38-23 and Benton cruised past Line Mountain 58-11.

Montoursville opened Wednesday’s clash against North Penn-Liberty with a fall in 5 minutes and 21 seconds by Cole Yonkin at 215 pounds against George Valentine. Landon Morehart followed with a fall at 285 over Gaven Roe in 3:46. Aristotelis Bobotas defeated Brayden Pequignot in a close fight at 107, 3-1 before Conner Lagier wasted very little time at 114 by pinning Charles Aumick in just 14 seconds.

Branden Wentzel was also quick on 121, pinning Trinity Robinson in 73 seconds while David Kennedy pinned Riley Oakes on 127 in 41 seconds.

Montoursville’s Cole Johnson won by a crucial decision against Brock Smith at 139, 12-0, and Gage Wentzel pinned Ryan Roupp at 145 in an impressive 10 seconds and Easton Cleveland-Pequignot pinned at 172 in 3:24.

Montgomery won five fights by decision and two by tech fall in his win over Williamson.

Red Raiders newcomer Brandt Harer defeated Karter Osgood at 121 with a tech fall, 18-3, 0:58, and brother Conner Harer also won with a tech fall at 160, beating Williamson’s Joel Hultz, 22-7, 1: 55 Both Harers are ranked in the state.

At 114, Montgomery’s Carden Wagner caught a fall over Wyatt Dacheux in 66 seconds. After Brandt Harer’s win at 121, Williamson’s Noah Robinson beat Seth McClintock at 127 by decision 10-4. Montgomery countered with a fall at 133 from AJ Kroft in 67 seconds over Karter Stone before Williamson’s Aidric Passarallo won at 139 with a tough 6-4 decision over Brennan Emery.

After winning Passarallo, Montgomery has had wins in six of his last seven fights. Coy Bryson defeated Timothy Freeman 13-8 by decision at 172 and Layne Gingery won at 285 with a fall in 1:46 against Benjimin Freeman. Montgomery won at 152 and 189 by losses.

Williamson’s only other win came at 215 when Luke Sottolano pinned Gavin Mebane in 3:47.

After trading off Milton and Canton in the first four bouts with two wins each, Canton closed out the duel with six wins to secure a win over the Black Panthers.

Lyle Vermiyla won at 114 with a fall over Abbey Moser in 1:52 and made a two-game sprint for Milton in which the Black Panthers won at 285 (Paul Rohland) via a fall and picked up a losing win at 107. Cohen Landis (121) and Carson Rockwell (127) won consecutive matches by fall i 1:46 and major decision 13-4, respectively.

Holden Ward had a 16 second drop at 133 over Connor MCCaffery. Milton snapped Canton’s four-fight streak with a 9-5 decision win at 139 when Chase Lytle defeated Ryland Sakers. Hayden Ward pinned Quinn Keister with 145 in 2:48 and Hudson Ward beat Alex Parker with 152 by Tech Fall, 17-2, 4-0.

Milton’s Brady Wolfe won by decision, 9-2, with 160, and Alex Hoffman defeated Canton’s Brenen Taylor, 11-3, by big decision, 172.

Canton ended the duel with Riley Parker falling at 189 in 2:54 against Aiden Keizer.
